Cultural Politics of East Asia
Welcome to my website! I study the cultural politics of East Asian countries and the effects of culture and historical memory on international relations.
I am a former research professor at the University of Tokyo's the Institute of Social Science (社研) and former managing editor of the Social Science Japan Journal. I have also served as a visiting fellow at the Korea Institute for National Unification (통일연구원) in Seoul. My research has been supported by grants from the Fulbright Foundation and the Korea Foundation.
I am currently actively searching for a post in East Asia where I can continue my research on East Asian comparative politics and international relations. If you are interested in hiring me, please get in touch via my contact information below.
Research Interests
My research focuses on the cultural politics of East Asia, particularly top-down imposition of national culture in autocracies and the uses of forbidden culture as mobilizing symbols in social movements.
My current book project, based on 7+ years of research of literature produced by the North Korean Writers' Union, examines how foreigners and foreign lands are depicted in North Korean state-produced historical novels.
